The climbing lane widened the A6 Glenshane Road 12 kilometres west of Dungiven to create a safe overtaking opportunity for east bound traffic. The online improvement symmetrically widened the existing road to 12 metres and is marked as two lanes (3.2 metre wide nearside lane and 3.4 metre wide overtaking lane) uphill towards Dungiven and one lane (3.4 metres wide) downhill towards Drumahoe, with opposing traffic streams separated by a double white line system. The running carriageway is flanked either side by 1 metre wide edge strips. Contiguous ghost islands were included to promote safe right turns into farmyards either side of the Glenshane Road. The 1960s ‘Bennett’ junction at Ballyhanedin crossroads was replaced with a compact ghost island layout.
