Overall length:2.9 kilometres
Overtaking Length:2.2 kilometres
Cost:£1 million
Type:Climbing Lane
Contract:Traditional Consultant Design Contractor Build
Contractor:F P McCann Ltd
Status:Open to traffic July 2003

The climbing lane widened the A6 Glenshane Road 10 kilometres east of Dungiven to create a safe overtaking opportunity for east bound traffic. The online improvement symmetrically widened the existing road to 12 metres and is marked as two lanes (3.2 metre wide nearside lane and 3.4 metre wide overtaking lane) uphill towards Maghera and one lane (3.4 metres wide) downhill towards Dungiven, with opposing traffic streams separated by a double white line system. The running carriageway is flanked either side by 1 metre wide edge strips. A ghost island was included to promote safe right turns into the Ponderosa Bar near the top of Glenshane mountain.
