The climbing lane widened the A6 Glenshane Road west of Burntollet Bridge to create a safe overtaking opportunity for west bound traffic. The online improvement asymmetrically widened the existing road to 12 metres and is marked as two lanes (3.2 metre wide nearside lane and 3.4 metre wide overtaking lane) uphill towards Drumahoe and one lane (3.4 metres wide) downhill towards Dungiven, with opposing traffic streams separated by a double white line system. The running carriageway is flanked either side by 1 metre wide edge strips. Ghost islands were included to promote safe right turns into Ervery Road, Mavis Road and Tamnaherin Road.
