Cairnshill Park & Ride
The Foyle Bridge is located on one of the five Key Transport Corridors included in the Regional Strategic Transport Network identified in the Regional Development Strategy. This Belfast - Londonderry corridor provides the main linkage for the North West of N I and Northern Donegal to G B through the ports of Belfast and Larne.
At present the bridge carries 30,000 vehicles per day of which 2,700 are HGV's. Over the next 10 years it is estimated that traffic will increase to 36,000 vehicles and 3,200 HGV's. Following an assessment in 1999, it was found that the bridge required strengthening in order to carry the full range of vehicles that it was intended to.
Work started in November 2003 and is due to be completed in August 2005 and includes:
- strengthening (to be completed in December 2004);
- resurfacing the bridge deck and
- repainting (it was decided to undertake this additional work).
While this work is ongoing, the bridge will be reduced to a single lane in both directions as explained further in an information leaflet (138Kb)
.
