| Contract: | Design and Build |
| Contractor: | F P McCann Ltd |
| Status: | Open to traffic March 2004 |
Toome Bypass, constructed around the northern periphery of Toome diverts traffic onto a 3.5 kilometre dual carriageway . A 98 metre long single span 'Bowstring Girder' bridge carries the bypass over the Lower River Bann, allowing the bypass approach embankments to be kept low in the environmentally sensitive area north of the village.
The ‘design and build’ bypass was constructed by contractor FP McCann. The bypass opened to traffic in 15 March 2004.
Up to 22,000 vehicles previously passed through Toome every day and the new bypass has removed a significant amount of the traffic. The general quality of life in the village has greatly improved as has access to the local community facilities. Traffic levels on local roads have also been reduced with consequent environmental, community and safety benefits.
