The Belfast Metropolitan Area (BMA) comprises the six District Council areas of Belfast, Carrickfergus, Castlereagh, Lisburn. Newtownabbey and North Down.

Additionally, the BMTP has taken account of the transport movements that lie outside these administrative areas but that are within the Belfast journey to work area. This equates to roughly a 30 mile radius from Belfast City Centre.

Taken together, the six council areas and the remainder of the Belfast journey to work area are known as the BMTP Study Area.
