Rathlin Island Ferry

Picture of Rathlin coast

Rathlin Island has a rare, untamed beauty. The wildlife is evident before you step ashore - the ferry crossing presents many opportunities to spot auks, gannets and gulls with even a chance of porpoises or dolphins. Seals and eider ducks laze around the harbour at most times of the year. The RSPB have a view point on the island open everyday where you can get great views of the seabird colony

The Rathlin Ferry Service is a ‘lifeline’ ferry link to Rathlin Island, which is Northern Ireland’s only, inhabited offshore island.  Rathlin Island is located 6 miles from Ballycastle, off the northeast Antrim coast, and has a resident population of around 80 people. However, during the summer period the resident population rises to around 100.  The ferry service is the only public means available to access and egress the Island.

Historically, a ferry service between Rathlin Island and Ballycastle was provided by the islanders themselves using converted fishing boats. In 1991, the two existing ferry operators on Rathlin Island approached the then Department of the Environment to seek some form of subsidy as they were experiencing financial difficulties. The Department recognised that action would have to be taken to improve the ferry service to halt the decline in Rathlin’s population, to encourage tourism and improve economic prospects.

Rathlin Island Ferry Ltd took over the ferry service in July 2008 providing an enhanced summer and winter timetable, using a combination of the current roll-on/roll-off ferry and a passenger only ferry .In July 2009 RIFL introduced a new purpose built high speed passenger only ferry the Rathlin Express that proved a great success, carrying 10,000 more passengers than in summer 2008. The new vessel provides a comfortable, accessible and faster service.

Sailings are more frequent in the summer than in the winter but always subject to weather conditions. Advanced booking is advisable to avoid disappointment. Vehicle access to the island is restricted and only drivers who hold a residents pass or a vehicle permit can take their vehicle on the ferry. Information about vehicle permits is available at Moyle District Council at 02820 762225.
