Air and Sea Ports

Ports and Public Transport Division is the sponsor Division for Northern Ireland's air and seaports with responsibility for policy and legislation in those areas. In contributing to the development of policy at national level it makes sure that the regulatory framework within which ports and airports operate is kept under review. The Division's role also includes providing financial and administrative support to help ensure the delivery of transport policy in Northern Ireland..

Guidance on Port Master Plans

Guidance on the development of port master plans was published by the Department for Regional Development on 1 October 2009 after a consultation carried out during April, May and June 2009.

This Guidance sets out a best practice framework to master planning to ensure that an informed and balanced approach is taken to future port development.  It is about ensuring that the ports can develop as efficient competitive businesses, yet also able to fulfil their important environmental and community responsibilities.

Port master planning is non-prescriptive and is not mandatory. Nevertheless, the main commercial ports in Northern Ireland are encouraged to embrace the master planning concept.
