Accessible Transport

The Accessible Transport Strategy

In 2005 the Department published the Accessible Transport Strategy (ATS). This strategy had the vision to

"have an accessible transport system that enables older people and people with disabilities to participate more fully in society, enjoy greater independence and experience a better quality of life."

A copy of the ATS can be found below in Word or PDF Format:

Travel Safe - a guide about community safety for people with learning disabilities.

One of the things the ATS said we can do is help people with learning disabilities travel more by themselves.

We have now published a guide for people with learning disabilities.

We found out everything we could about travelling safely. We read other guides, we looked things up on the internet, we talked to the police and to road safety officers. We talked to lots of people with learning disabilities about what they felt people needed to know. When we had done all that, we put all the information together in this book. To help make this book easy to understand, we took pictures of the things you will see when you are travelling in Northern Ireland.

We hope that this book helps you to get out and about and travel safe.

Because of all the pictures, we have split the document into sections to make it easier to download.
